What is environmental pollution?

Wherever people live there is environmental pollution. We can see it almost everywhere. Man disturbs nature to make his life better and also pollutes his surroundings.

Environmental pollution can be listed under three headings. They are water pollution, land pollution and air pollution.

Water pollution occurs in ponds, streams, rivers and seas. Chemicals sent out from industries and agro chemicals used by farmers that get into the water have an effect on marine life and at times kill the fish too. When man eats fish affected by these chemicals, they too fall ill.

Land pollution occurs through the dumping of garbage, pesticides and cutting of trees. Setting fire to forests leads to floods, acid rain, poor soil and the destruction of virgin land.

Air pollution is all around us. Smoke from vehicles and industries causes air pollution. Environmental pollution upsets the balance of nature.

A clean, healthy environment is necessary for the growth and development of all plants and animals. It is our duty to safeguard the environment without polluting it.

Helping elders

Our society comprises many elders because the majority of our population is old. There are many elders living in our own homes such as grandparents and elderly aunts and uncles.

Most elders are not strong and healthy and they need our help. It is our duty to help old people because we are young and strong. When we were unable to do things for ourselves elders stepped in to help us.

We could help our elders to take care of themselves by helping them go about in public places, preparing food for them and by looking into their health and personal needs. We can also take them to places of worship. Many elders live in homes and are neglected.
