A grand Revelation

by Mahes Perera

Sean

Make your way to the club house Rhythm & Blues this Wednesday and soak in the pulsating sounds of the youth band Revelation who have the knack of keeping groovers on the floor until its closing time.

Mind you, by midnight there's no inch space for you to move around freely, so bear in mind that old adage about the early bird if you want to be right up in front to get the full blast of the mixed repertoire of the band. Revelation in a short spell of time, since they returned from Dubai, have wowed many an audience with their versions of hits ranging, from classic rock, rock'n roll, top hits of the '70s and '80s, reggae and other dance hits.

"We are simple cover musicians. Stars are musicians who play their own stuff" says Sean Dharmaratne the charismatic vocalist in the band. "We have a new bassist, Shaman Ranaweera who is a crazy Rasta man and he adds a lot of colour with his reggae rhythms and bass solos. He supports me a lot with the vocals. I work hard, see this is my job and I don't like to sound the same after a few months. I think it would mean we are becoming stale. So I juggle around to give the audience something fresh all the time."

Revelation's current line up is besides Sean includes Diren Sabaratnam on drums, Shaman on bass/guitar/vocals, Kanchana Jayasinghe on keyboards/piano/bass with Zion de Silva playing lead guitar. Giving that glitz to the band is Tehani Asmone who is the female vocalist, Sherry, by name.

If you are unable to keep the Wednesday date with Revelation, don't panic 'cos the band is featured on Saturdays too at R&B. And what's more, you can freak out on Friday evenings dancing to their vibes at the hut, Mt. Lavinia Hotel.

"I started my club singing at the hut, when I was with Dream Team. I love the atmosphere and it has been a 'happening' venue for us, so far" continues Sean. "Lot of people ask me why our band is not featured on other days and I tell them, that we like to set standards. A lot of places offer very little We have fair rates and they must remember that you have to move with the inflation if you have to survive."

Come New Year's eve and Revelation will be in full swing at Water's Edge (Golf and Country Club).

Currently Sean is busy working out plans to stage fund raiser concerts for the much needed children's charities. "It is important as musicians, we stretch out a hand to help make the lives of the needy children easier than what it is at present and very soon I'm going to make that a reality" says a confident Sean, who has made many waves musically, ever since his debut into the industry.
