For 'under-employed' grads :

Jobs soon on par with qualifications

by Ananda Kannangara

At least 50 per cent from 4,783 'under-employed' graduates, who are currently employed under various categories in the public sector will be immediately granted suitable posts on par with their university academic qualifications, Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya told the "Sunday Observer".

The Deputy Minister said that this issue raised by the Under-Employed Graduates Association (UEGA) was now being scrutinised by the Finance Ministry authorities. According to the UEGA, these graduates who are currently employed in the public sector have not obtained suitable jobs on par with their academic qualifications.

Meanwhile, in a letter to Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama, the UEGA has expressed its unhappiness over the inability to meet the minister during the last two occasions to discuss the issue, although some of their representatives were invited by him to the ministry office.

UEGA treasurer Mahinda Nawaratna said that these jobs, offered to its members in the public sector institutions did not suit their academic qualifications.

"It is a pity that around 83 of our members are currently working at various public institutions as labourers, office peons and attendants in government hospitals," he said.

He said the basic salaries of its members employed as general clerks, storekeepers, gramaseva niladaris and other similar capacities were less than Rs. 4,500 a month, while those who have already been selected for employment under the government's proposed jobs scheme for unemployed graduates, would be paid Rs. 6,130 after the three-month training period was over.

He said the union had also discussed this matter with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, Public Administration Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda and Rural Industries Minister K.D. Lal Kantha, but there was no positive response so far.

"We once again appeal to the relevant authorities to look into our problem and provide us with suitable jobs according to our academic qualifications," Nawaratna added.
