Lanka's triple attraction will fill hotel rooms this winter by Reggie Fernando, our London Corr A rare and exceptional assessment of Sri Lanka as a very special long haul tourist destination by Britain's print and electronic media has virtually guaranteed the filling up of hotel rooms in the island during the winter season from December to March 2005. Top holiday travel commentators here believe that a huge number of British visitors will flock to Sri Lanka following the amazing assessments that no other country can boast of, was publicised by the media. They are: Sri Lanka was selected the second Best Island in the world by Channel Five television's Holiday Series; Unawatuna beach in the south west coast was chosen as the Best Beach in the world by the Discovery Channel and the island won third place as the Best Romantic Place in the world in the program World's Greatest Escapes conducted by Channel Five Holiday Series. Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Director, Sri Lanka Tourist Board for UK, Ireland and Benelux Countries Ms Charmarie Maelge said: " The United Kingdom has played a major role in generating a vast number of tourists to Sri Lanka in the recent past. Sri Lanka's tourism industry is showing remarkable growth trends and last year (2003) this market generated twenty per cent of the total arrivals to the country with more than 93,000 British tourists. She further stated that already this year up to the end of August, more than 63,000 tourists from the British Isles have visited Sri Lanka creating a growth of nineteen per cent over last year. Continuing she said "We are trying to increase this number substantially before the year ends with an anticipated growth of twenty per cent." |
