Swiss Film Season - 2004

The Swiss Film season 2004 presented by the Asian Film Centre in association with Swiss Films (Zurich) and the Embassy of the Switzerland in Sri Lanka will be held at BMICH - Cinema Colombo from October 23 to 30 (except 27th). The festival will be repeated in Trincomalee and Jaffna on November 3 to 7 and 17 to 21 respectively.

The festival will be inaugurated by the chief quest Bernardino Regassoni, Ambassador of Switzerland to Sri Lanka and the quest of honour Ms. Patricia Plattner the director of the opening film Les Petites Couleurs (A Little Colour) at BMICH Cinema on Saturday October 23, 2004 at 6.30 p.m. The screening of the same film will follow the inauguration ceremony only for invitees. Public screenings will commence on October, Saturday 23, until Saturday October 30 daily at 4.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. except 27th Poya day.

This is the fourth such Swiss Film Season organised in Sri Lanka. The first collaboration between the three organizations was in 1992. This was a unique event in Sri Lanka's film history since it was the first comprehensive introduction that our audiences received to the cinema of Switzerland. The second edition in 1996 and third in 2000 reinforced the budding relationship.

Seven feature films, accompanied by seven short and animation films will be screened. All films are in 35 mm, colour and with English subtitles. Admission is free on first come first served basis.

Les petites couleurs (A Little Colour) directed by Patricia Plattner will be screened on Saturday, October 23. This is a story of a young hairdresser who is beaten regularly by her husband. After a terrible argument with her husband Francis, a violent and impulsive man, Christelle runs away and takes an option on a new life.

Award winning film 'Escapes to Paradise' directed by Nino Jacusso to be screened in October 24 tells the story of a Kurdish family escaping from ethnic conflict in Turkey and are seeking asylum in Switzerland. This shows the situation of present day Switzerland and it is a realistic, amusing and dramatic film.

The film scheduled for Monday 25 is Azzurro (director-Denis Rabaglia). It dramatizes the relationship between a grandfather and a granddaughter. The grandfather wants to revisit the past, and the granddaughter to see what the future holds in store for her.

The young film director Anna Luif's first feature film Little Girl Blue, on Tuesday 26 is about a teenage girl who moves to a new town and falls in love with a young boy who is her father's lover's son and it is bound to have serious consequences. This film is screened under most suitable for adults rating.

On dirait le Sud (Back for More) directed by Vincent Pluss was awarded Best Feature Film, Swiss Film Prize in 2003. It is an emotional relationship between a divorced father, his children, his ex-wife and her lover. (October 28)

The film to be shown on Friday 29 under Most Suitable for Adults rating Utopia Blues is the only feature film among the many documentaries directed by Stefan Haupt. It bagged numerous awards in the International Film Festivals. It is a story of a fun-loving youth who is trying to make his dream of total freedom became reality, but unexpectedly becomes bitter and earnest.

On October 30, the closing film is Oltre it confine (Across the Border) directed by award winning film director Rollanda Colla.

It is arguably the highlight of this film season. The story takes place in 1993. The meeting of an Italian woman architect and a Bosnian refugee: the shock of two worlds and two wars. It is screening under the Only for Adults censor rating.

The short & animation films to be shown along with these seven features, reflects the high quality and wide range of Swiss cinema today and confirms its place among the leading film making nations of Europe.
