Aussies men's and women's world champs

by Ranjan Anandappa

Australia's men and women emerged undisputed World Champions for the fifth consecutive year when they beat Sri Lanka by 22 runs and South Africa by 16 runs respectively at the Hutch Indoor World Cricket finals played at the Austasia Indoor Cricket Complex yesterday.

The Aussies beat Sri Lanka in a tense final in front of a capacity crowd as the Lankans, from a virtual winning position, went down fighting and ultimately surrendered to the more experienced Australians who fought back gallantly.

Indoor cricket, is confined to 16 overs per side and the batsmen batting in pairs for four overs each in an eight per side game Australia, batting first, scored 70. The Lankan bowlers did well to restrict the strong Aussie outfit with a fine fielding display backed up by some good bowling. Robert Fitzgerald (15), skipper Scott Johnson (16,) and Mathew Brouks (17) were the main scorers.

Sri Lanka in reply were given a rousing start by Chrishantha Pieris (21) and Tharindu Mendis (19) who put on 40 runs in the first four overs without being dismissed even once. But thereafter the Lankan batsmen could not maintain the same tempo created by the opening pair and lost quick wickets as they ran themselves out in search of quick runs and finally was 22 runs short of a win.

Australia 70 in 16 overs. ( Robert Fitzgerald 15, Scott Johnson 16, Mathew Brouks 17, Tharindu Mendis 3 for 5, Iroshan de Silva 2 for 1, Sachindra Gonaduwa 2 for 7, Asela Pathirana 2 for 9)

Sri Lanka 48 in 16 overs. ( Chrishantha Pieris 21, Tharindu Mendis 19, Sanjeeva Jayarathne 10, Scott Johnson 2 for 4, Mathew Brouks 6 for 15 Troy Gurski 2 for 9)

Women's final

Australia beat South Africa by 16 runs.

Australia 92 in 16 overs. (Juse Coleman 14, April Hames 12, Dulane Yohey 18, Amy Wills 17, Wilma Loubser 4 for 9, Aita Kotze 4 for 12)

South Africa 76 in 16 overs. (Nicola Nel 15, Van Der Westhuizen 21, Jude Coleman 2 for 10, Amy Wills 3 for 5, Elizebeth Pierce 4 for 3.)
