YESL develops fully fledged personality by Chanuka Mannapperuma The perception that business in adult territory was proved a myth last week when the Young Entrepreneur Sri Lanka (YESL) honoured young girls and boys with awards and certificates for being the best among the best at its sixth Annual Awards Ceremony. The Sixth Young Entrepreneur Sri Lanka YESL awards 2004 was held at BMICH on last Monday drew hundreds of children from many schools around the country, including rural areas. The most outstanding young Entrepreneurs were involved in the company programme.Children who set up their own companies appointed a Board of Directors comprising president, Finance executives, Marketing Managers,Production and Human Resource Managers could also be seen. Nimesha Herath of Musaeus College was selected as the Most Outstanding Young Entrepreneur of year 2003. Awards and trophies were presented to teachers and principals who supported the YESL program while special awards were given to graduate consultants. Speaking at the gathering President,YESL, Patrick Amarasinghe said,"In our country their are several young people without jobs Through this kind of program we can develop children attitude as well as knowledge.Not only that through this we can teach them how to make profit doing reasonable business practices," Amarasinghe added. The products and services offered by school companies were displayed at an exhibition held along with the awards ceremony.Giving comments about the exhibition, St.Joseph's college group of boys said this is a good opportunity they had in their life and "this will be a successful path to us in future business life". Chief guest of the ceremony, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Dr.Tara de Mel said "during presentation three years ago,I mentioned the specific importance of taking the YESL program to the rural school,because it is rarely, that such students get this kind of exposure. Today I am glad to see that this vision has been realized to a large extent." She said unlike any other program in this country, YESL has a serious focus on students from the more disadvantaged parts of the country. "There are many skills and competencies that young students like you need to acquire during adolescence and in the late twenties. These are not related to technology,IT,Mathematics or science. But these are far more important skills that I believe will contribute to making a wholesome person with a rounded personality, when leaving school.That is the kind of ideal person equipped with the correct values and attitudes towards life" she added. YESL program helps you to think critically to analyze problems and learn to solve them intelligently, with maturity and in a civilized manner.Activities such as these help children to work as members and then as a leader of a team.She said it helps children to cope with challenges in a responsible and dignified manner. YESL was launched in 1998 with 1000 students in nine schools and it has now spread its wings to 300 school in the country,encompassing about 30,000 children.The program is implemented at primary,intermediary and senior levels,where students receive a practical education in business economics and entrepreneurship to make them employable.YESL is a member nation franchise holder of Junior Achievements International, the world's largest and fastest growing business and economic education program.It has spread in 112 countries and involves millions of children. |
