Unilever to help drought-striken villagers

Sri Lanka's leading laundry soap manufacturer Unilever Sri Lanka Ltd has undertaken to construct 15 new wells in North Central province to assist drought striken villagers. The total investment for the project is approximately Rs 4.5 million, Director Human Resource and Customer Relations Dr Anura Ekanayake said.

He said that the company has launched many community service projects in the country and this is one of the main programs that has been undertaken by the company. These wells are 15 feet in diameter, named as 'Hiru Dutu Gama' project to serve to strengthen the bond shared between the people and the brand, he added.

Sunlight Brand Manager, Bathiya Dayaratne said that the company expected to construct five wells at Medirigiriya and 10 wells at Welikanda, which will be constructed with the assistance from villagers.

He said that five wells were opened under the first phase at Medirigiriya area benefitting more than 250-300 families and the construction work of other 10 wells is under way.
