CMTA tells Govt. :

Waive off excise duty for franchise car dealers

by Hiran H. Senewiratne

The Ceylon Motor Traders Association (CMTA) urges the government to waive off the Excise duty for franchise car dealers who had placed their orders before October 14.

CMTA Chairman Ajit Algama said that currently more than 750-1000 vehicles are due at the Colombo Port for clearance, and the franchisers would have to pay high duty for those vehicles .

Algama noted that this increase of duty is exorbitant and it will adversely affect the entire transport sector.

CMTA comprises 27 brand new franchise importers and is affiliated to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. It has also provided job opportunities, increasing by 25 per cent a year, and this increase will reduce in the future, he said.

Chairman Algama also said that most of the public transport and other vehicles on our roads are quite old and hence consume excessive fuel without properly planned road network and added that this situation has resulted in traffic congestions at peak hours burning fuel unnecessarily.

Carplan KIA Motors Managing Director Mahen Thambiah, said that with the increase of the tax the company would not be able to achieve targets in the future.

At present five of their employees are abroad on training at the company's expense and in future the company has to discontinue such programs , Thambiah said.

He said that the government should allow brand new cars into the country without allowing junk vehicles to be imported.

Thambiah stressed that Sri Lanka is the only country in the world that allows junk vehicles to flood the market.
