CDMA technique for first time in Sri Lanka Sri Lanka, for the first time, is going to have 'CDMA' technique on its telecommunication system which will ensure a clearer conversation at both ends of the telephone connection, besides it being cost-effective, Posts & Telecommunication Minister, D.M Jayaratne said. Already two contenders have forwarded their applications for the project. Unlike in the 'GSM' technique which is currently being used for the fixed phones in the telecom network, the CDMA can be used for the installing of both, fixed and mobile phones. According to Ministry Secretary, C. Maliyadda, Base Stations (telecommunication towers) needed for the system could be fitted at five kilometre distance. Minister Jayaratne said that he wants the project be started in the rural areas. Investigations by the Ministry had revealed that the rural folk underwent severe hardship in want of telephone facilities. In addition to the CDMA which uses the frequency method, the Ministry is also probing the installation of telephones via the satellite which is another 'first' of its kind in the country. Jayaratne said that there too they had received applications from two other companies, reputed in the telecommunication field. (AN) |
