Buddhism thriving in Asian countries by Ananda Kannangara Although Buddhism originated in India, it was indeed happy to note that it prospered not only in our country but also in many other Asian countries including Korea where at least 50 per cent of the population were Buddhists, observed Lakshman Jayakody, Advisor to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the opening ceremony of the photographic exhibition of Buddhist temples in South Korea, held at Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo recently. About 150 photographs were displayed at the exhibition, conducted to mark the national day of Korea. Secretary, Sri Lanka-Korea Buddhist Cultural Council (SLKBCC), Dr. Berti Pieris, said that both Sri Lanka and Korea were countries with rich Buddhist traditions and the main objective of conducting an exhibition of this nature was to promote a closer understanding on common traditions among the people of the two countries. "During the last ten years our organisation had conducted several lectures on Buddhism to create an awareness of our people about Buddhist rituals and activities practised in Korea and also invited Korean Buddhist priests to visit here,"he said. |
