'DS' led our freedom struggle by Ananda Kannangara "The courage, dedication and devotion of Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister, the late D. S. Senanayake, in the struggle to gain independence to our motherland from the colonial rule and uplift the economy by developing the agricultural sector is held in high esteem and admired by the people forever". This was observed by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at a ceremony held at the Independence Square, Colombo, to commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of the late D.S. Senanayake. Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe was also present. Colombo Mayor Prasanna Gunawardana garlanded the D.S. Senanayake statue. The Premier also highlighted the yeoman service rendered by the late D.S. Senanayake to uplift the living standards of the people by establishing agricultural colonies and constructing lakes. Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara said that the late Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake not only spearheaded the country's freedom struggle. but was also instrumental in furthering the cause of the Temperance Movement in Sri Lanka. UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasooriya and Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku also spoke. |
