News in brief

Passport funeral

A different type of a bonfire was witnessed by few officials at Kanatte cemetery grounds on Friday noon on the boundary of the Colombo Golf course where 25,000 "M" series Passports were set ablaze on a pile of tyres.

Several top officials from the Immigration and Emigration Department and senior police officers from CID had kept watch for nearly five hours till every scrap of paper was burnt out completely.

The 'M' type passports which have been printed abroad had become obsolete and have already been replaced by 'N' type passports which will be valid for a period of ten years with additional security features. Another lot of 'M' type passports are expected to go up in flames in the near future. (J.J.)
