Services of accountants vital to re-build the nation

Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle urged all accounting professionals to help in the re-building of the nation.

"The chartered accountant in my view is more than any other Professional, who could help in the re-building of the nation," Minister Fernandopulle said at the inauguration of the 25th National Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL)

A chartered accountant has to play the role of a facilitator in strengthening of corporate Governance, risk Management, rationalisation of business portfolios and formulating financial instruments that add value to business, Minister Fernandopulle who was not present due to unavoidable circumstances, turn up and his speech was read out by Ministry Secretary S.Wirithamulla

In the speech the Minister had said the ICASL was the premier National Accountancy body in the country and one of the prestigious organisations that come under his Ministry's purview

"I am glad to note that the Institute is playing a dynamic role in the Global Accountancy Profession," he added.

ICASL has been a founder member of the South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA) and held the Presidency of SAFA thrice over the past decade and half. It is also a member of the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA), and a delegation over 35 persons from Asia and Pacific region participated at the ceremony.

The Minister also noted that the ICASL was the education institute that has the highest student population outside the university system and added that these professionals had a demand both in the public and private sector in the country.

"I understand that nearly 40 per cent of the members of the institute are employed in 41 countries around the globe and this is an indication of the high standard of the qualification," Minister added.
