Jerome Speldewinde :

Back to woo his fans

Jerome Speldewinde

Back this week to be a familiar sight on our stages is singer/guitarist Jerome Speldewinde who has the rare knack to 'woo' the local entertainment scene with absolute ease. Jerome will be performing live at the UGB, Hilton Colombo Residence on Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 pm onwards.

Yesterday the dynamic blues singer/guitarist Glen Terry was featured at the UGB and Glen's next guest spot will be on Saturday November 20. Jerome Speldewinde's remarkable repertoire has always been his major plus and what surprises music lovers and his fans is his ability to remember all the words of all the songs, and very often he throws in the verses of the standards from the great songwriters, before he sings the chorus, which is something that most of our singers leave out conveniently.

On Thursdays at the UGB Jerome will be backed by Jazz Project led by the versatile pianist/keyboardist Dilukshi Sirimane with Revel Crake - guitar, Basil Paiva - bass and Royle Andrews - drums. So make the date on Thursdays and enjoy the unaffected singing style of Jerome Speldewinde.

'Eco explorers' pool their talents

Two eco-enthusiasts and enterprising naturalists Darshika Weeraperuma and Tharindra de Silva have pooled their interests and established 'The Eco Explorers' - the newest company to offer local and foreign nature lovers an enriching experience through the diversity of Sri Lanka's flora and fauna.

Tharindra and Dharshika

The boutique and gallery which was opened on Saturday October 30, is situated off Lilian Avenue off Hotel Road in Mount Lavinia. "Ours is neither eco-tourism, nor eco-adventure. Ours is a totally holistic approach to the overall eco-experience. Man and Nature are co-dependent in their eternal quest for existence.

Hence, the need for greater understanding, says Tharindra who is also a co-director of Adahas with her husband Kumar de Silva. Eco-Explorers offers travellers five tailor-made expeditions through locations such as Uda Walawe, Kaudulla, Hortan Plains, Yala and Sinharaja. The theme gallery is a permanent exhibition of the work of many nature and wildlife artists and photographers, the former expressing themselves through oils, water colours, charcoal drawings and dot art.

The boutique offers a range of utility and gift items made from clay, cloth, reed, re-cycled paper and other eco-friendly material. A new line of coconut shell jewellery was also launched for the discerning woman. Dharshika Weeraperuma affirmed that 'each expedition' is an educational experience where clients are taught how to fully appreciate Natures flora and fauna.
