Sisu Udana Vishistayo

The People's Bank has received a large number of applications for its Sisu Udana Vishistayo awards competition launched recently to recognise the best of the outstanding achievers at school level in several categories - sports, drama, dance and song, art, environment and conservation, computer software and oratory.

"A vast majority of applicants have excelled in skills and talents in multiple areas which reflect the depth of talent in the country," said Asoka de Silva, CEO/General Manager People's Bank. He adds that applications have not only been received from the major cities but also from the remotest villages thus reflecting the widespread talent base of our youth. The Bank has received over 2000 applications from the North, including Wanni and Kilinochchi which is a "satisfying response that will help to further develop this scheme in the future."

The objectives of the Sisu Udana Vishistayo annual awards scheme are to identify and recognise the best of the best outstanding achievers at school level and through the national level recognition and the Bank's support, that such winners will be inspired to reach greater heights. "It is the hope of the Bank that these young stars of tomorrow will grow to be future leaders of our nation and that other children across the nation will be further encouraged to develop their own skills and capabilities," de Silva said.

The judging process is being carried out across the country where seven leading citizens from each of the 25 districts have been selected to form the panel. The judging is being carried out on a uniform marking scheme which will produce the winners based on the highest points earned in the process.

They will select five winners from each district and these winners will be given cash prizes of Rs. 10,000 each. Thereafter, ten national level winners will be identified for cash prizes of Rs. 25,000 each. In addition, the Bank will select the ten least privileged schools that have produced a winner and award Rs. 50,000 to develop the library, science laboratory or sports facility.

Any school or winners with an existing Sisu Udana account, as per the terms of this scheme, will double their prize money. The winners will be felicitated with attractive trophies and certificates at a gala awards ceremony enriched by outstanding performance of drama, song and dance and artistic prowess on December 29, 2004.
