Latvian cultural show

Skandiniecki

Making their debut in Sri Lanka will be the only Latvian group in the world today who performs authentic Live folklore. Skandiniecki's traditional programme of songs and dances, will be in focus at the Terrace of the Mount Lavinia Hotel from Wednesday November 17 to Monday November 22.

The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Latvia in Sri Lanka will be presenting this cultural programme of Latvian Food and Music in collaboration with the Mount Lavinia Hotel. Skandiniecki over the years have succeeded in bringing new life to the beautiful and powerful folk songs and dances and are constantly touring Europe and Asia. They have just returned from Thailand and Sri Lanka is their next stop.

The group will also be performing at three schools in Colombo to share their traditional heritage with the children.

The schools at which they will perform during their stay here are St. Joseph's College, Ladies College and Elizabeth Moir International School.

The group has succeeded in cultivating the ethnographic manner of singing a non-affected way of dancing which has drawn many an audience to them.

The Latvian Food promotion with its delightful Scandinivian influences will be prepared by a special Chef flown down from Raga, Latvia. Head Chef Krists Ulass and Chef Ralf Vogt of Mount Lavinia will collaborate to lay out a wide spread of traditional Latvian food in this promotion that will be held at the Governors Restaurant.

SAARC Wedding Splendour

SAARC women's association of Sri Lanka - an association of women of the SAARC region residing in Colombo - who are dedicated to fostering friendship among women in the region through cultural activity - are organising a grand cultural event scheduled to be held at the Galle Face Hotel on November 24. The event titled wedding splendour is a coffee morning from 10 am to 1 pm.

SAARC Women’s Association chapter members Left to Right: Secretary, Rohini Yoheswaran, President, Tasneem Jafferjee, Past President, Nimmie Thambiayah, Kumari Ratnaweera, Chief Jailor, Female Ward.

Wedding Splendour will be an enactment of the marriage rituals of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The embassies of these SAARC countries will be providing some of the participants, the exotic attire and the music for the rituals, dances performed at these ceremonies.

Each SAARC country will also have a stall with their products for sale. A delegation of SAARC members from the Pakistan chapter will be flying down especially for this function, and will be bringing many items from Pakistan for sale.

Proceeds generated by this will be utilised to supply the Women Prisoners at Welikada Prison with their needs.

Members of the SAARC Women's Associations of Sri Lanka have visited the Welikada Prison and identified several items that are required to improve the welfare of the female prisoners.

Espana Cani and all that's Spanish

The majestic chords of 'Espana Cani' heralded the entry of the exotic toreador and his 'cloak' in a dance sequence that portrayed the Spanish arrogance of the bullfighter and the subduedness of the bull.

Kevin and Kaushi

The event was 'Viva Espagna' and the dancers Kevin and Kaushi admirably foot stomped their steps and spread the Spanish flavour and excitement - an ideal opener for the evening at the Taj Samudra. It was an 'Awards Night' and felicitation for the local Travel Trade for the support and co-operation extended by the agents towards the Taj Group of Hotels, hosted by Colombo Taj Samudra. Besides the three Taj Group of Hotels too were felicitated for their success stories in recent times.

But what will long live in the memory of the audience and guests will be the interior decor of the ballroom that breathed fire, the Spanish flamenco dancing and most of all the Spanish and Latin time honoured unforgettable tunes and songs played by the string and wind band Friends in Harmony. The band has to be commended for their excellent repertoire, rarely heard these days even on radio.

Complementing this Spanish extravaganza was the food and beverage in a lavish buffet which carried the Spanish theme to the hilt.
