Eid-ul-Fitr, day of peace and thanksgiving

by S. H. A. Careem

Muslims all over the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr today (14) or tomorrow (depending on the sighting of the moon) bringing to an end the month of Ramadan.

Ramadan reminds Muslims of the declaration and the establishment of human rights in the Quran, securing the basic human rights, safeguarding genuine faith in god and developing spirituality, morality, knowledge and social solidarity.

During Ramadan Muslims pray more, read and listen to the Quran daily, and observe strict self-discipline through fasting.

They give 'zakaath' to the poor at the end of the month. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has stated "Ramadan burns the sins and faults as fire burns the wood".

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide to mankind and as a clear evidence for guiding and judging between right and wrong.

Fasting during Ramadan involves total abstinence from food, drinks and marital relations throughout the day.

Night of Power

The Quran speaks about the great night which the whole universe marked with joy and prayers.

Laylat-al-Qadr (Night of Power) is the night in the year 610 A.D. in which the Holy Quran was first revealed. This night is great because of what the Holy Quran contains: an ideology, a basis for values and standards and a comprehensive code and moral of social behaviour, all of which promote peace.

Surah-al-Qadr states that this great night occurs during one of the last 10 days of Ramadan. Due to this reason the last 10 days of Ramadan are taken to be spiritually beneficial nights. The Surah describes the Night of Power as better than thousand months of peace until the rising of the dawn.

The Prophet (pbuh) specified that the conservation of that night must be motivated by faith and devotion.

The Ramazan festival which marks the end of fasting is known as Eid-ul-Fitr.

The word Eid means recurring happiness or festivity.

On this day of Eid, the Eid prayer is very important to every Muslim. This prayer has the merits of the daily five times prayers and the weekly Friday Jumma prayers. When Muslims assemble in the congregation of the day, they all whole-heartedly pray for forgiveness and strength of faith.

Allah has assured those who approach Him with sincerity of His mercy and forgiveness.

Eid festival is a celebration of a remarkable achievement of every Muslim in the services of Allah. Eid is a thanksgiving day.

Eid festival is a day of peace and thanksgiving, a day of forgiveness and moral victory, a day of festive remembrance. It is also a Day of Islam, a day of Allah.
