Fly a kite...

Flying kites is a popular pastime throughout the world, especially among children.

It has a very long history; even before the invention of the aeroplane, kites had been used.

During the sunny and windy season, children all over the world are seen with kites. This is a very enjoyable activity which is beneficial to one's physical and mental health. It can be enjoyed by one person or in a group.

There are many ways through which flying kites can benefit children. Children can develop their creative talents by finding new ways to make kites; in the shape of butterflies, aeroplanes, fish, cobras or eagles.

The Wright Brothers invented the aeroplane after observing the movement of kites in the sky. Who knows what you will achieve?

On the other hand, children who play with kites always go to the sea shore, a playground or a similar open place. So, they can get fresh air as well instead of the polluted air of the city.

When talking about kites, one area of concern is the importing of foreign kites to Sri Lanka.

Nowadays most parents buy these imported kites for their children. As a result, children are not encouraged to try their hand at developing things and their creative talents are not fostered. Our foreign exchange is also wasted as we pay other countries for these imports.

It is always important to let the children make their own kites. You too will surely enjoy flying your own kite than buying one which looks just like the kite the child beside you is flying!

Ramazan ending the fast

Muslims all over the world will be celebrating Ramazan today (November 14). The Ramazan festival is known as Eid-ul-Fitr. The word Eid means recurring happiness or festivity.Eid-ul-Fitr is the festival of fast breaking. On this day of Eid, the Eid prayer is very important for every Muslim.

This prayer has the merits of the daily five-times prayers and the weekly Friday Jummah prayer.Eid is a thanksgiving day. All Muslims assemble in a brotherly and joyful atmosphere to offer their gratitude to Allah for helping them to fulfil their spiritual obligations of fasting. When all Muslims congregate on this day, everyone whole-heartedly pray to Allah for forgiveness and strength of faith. And Allah had assured those who approach Him with sincerity of His mercy and forgiveness.

This festival day is a day of peace and thanksgiving, a day of forgiveness and moral victory, and also a day of festive remembrance.

We wish all our Muslim readers a happy Ramazan!
