President among world's most senior statespersons President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga completed 10 years in office on November 12, 2004. Having won the Presidential election in 1994 with a record vote of 62 per cent she went to the polls again in the year 2000, a year before the expiry of her term of office and won again convincingly beating her opponent. An astute politician she led her party to victory in 12 out of 14 elections during her tenure as President.After completing 10 years in office she remains one of the most senior Heads of State and Heads of Government in the world today. Those who are serving longer terms include among others President Abdul Gayoom of the Maldives, President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos of Angola, President Fidel Castro Ruz of Cuba, Sultan Sir Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and President Lt. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda. She is also one of the long-standing women leaders. |
