Easy access of Madanamodaka to school kids

by L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy

A raid conducted on a trade stall opposite Teldeniya police station by a team of officials from Kandy District Special Investigation Unit, where a person alleged to have kept in his possession for sale without relevant permit, 80 boxes of Madanamodaka each containing 25 pieces.

The suspect was later produced before Teldeniya Magistrate Saliya Perera and when he pleaded not guilty the Magistrate ordered the suspect to be released on Rs. 25,000 cash bail, Rs. 50,000 with surety bail with two sureties.

The suspect was told to be present in court on December 8. It has been revealed that this herbal preparation alleged to contain a larger proportion of drugs was being consumed mostly by school children.

The raid was conducted following a petition by some school children to DIG, Central Range, Nimal Mediwaka giving information about this trade centre selling Madanamodaka.

A team of police officers from the Unit, led by Inspector Farouk assisted by SI M. Ranaithu, SI Chinthaka Bandara and SI Rohana Bandara conducted the raid under the directions of OIC Inspector D. Gurusinghe.

This stuff was sold in the market as an Ayurvedic herbal preparation but of late, after revelation that it contained narcotic drugs, it was banned and ordered that it could not be sold without a licence issued by the Ayurvedic Medical Council.
