Budget speech in Sinhala

The maiden budget of the UPFA government is to be presented to Parliament in Sinhala for the first time, by the Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama. He told the Sunday Observer, "I will speak in Sinhala when I present our maiden budget in Parliament on November 18.

I will also use the proper and orthodox connotation of the Sinhala language when referring to words such as million and billion as, milliyanaya and billianaya". He added that this was first introduced to the vocabulary by former Rupavahini Chairman M. J. Perera but overlooked by many of the relevant officials, and caused much confusion and ambiguity among the public.

B'desh Foreign Minister here

Bangladesh Foreign Minister M. Morshed Khan arrived in Sri Lanka as a special envoy of Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and handed over letters of invitation to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Foreign Affairs Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, to attend the 13th SAARC Summit scheduled for 9th - 11th January 2005 in Dhaka.

According to SAARC practice, the incoming Chairperson of SAARC visits SAARC capitals to invite the heads of State or government to attend the next summit. In 2005, Bangladesh will take over the Chairmanship of SAARC from the present Chair, Pakistan.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "The visiting Bangladesh Foreign Minister called on the President and Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka. During the discussions, both sides exchanged views on matters relating to SAARC, including the future direction of the Association.

Help save this infant boy

Buddhi Isanga Perera, a three-month-old infant boy of No. 160/2 Olaboduwa, Gonapola, is suffering from an acute heart ailment. Dr. Aruna Kapuruge, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital has recommended an urgent heart surgery for total correction of the Tetralogy of Fallot to save his life.

The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 210,000. The President's Fund has agreed to provide part of the cost amounting to Rs. 115,000.

Buddhi's mother Mrs. H. Suneetha Fernando says her family is unable to foot the balance cost due to their present financial plight. She requests philanthropists and the public to help her child's cause by sending whatever financial contributions possible to help expedite the surgery.

All contributions should be remitted to account number 9429 at the Palannoruwa Rural Bank of the Horana Multi-purpose Co-operative society.

Heart patient seeks help

H. K. Hemachandra, of 'Priyankara' Ambagashandiya, Meewanapalana, Horana is suffering from an acute heart ailment and has been advised by Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. P. A. Gooneratne of Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital to undergo surgery, which is estimated to cost Rs. 350,000 including medical expenses.

He is a father of two children who are undergoing university education.

Since he is unable to afford this amount due to his poor financial plight, he requests public assistance to expedite the surgery and all donations and contributions may be remitted to Savings Account Number 041-207-425782-6, People's Bank Branch, Horana.

Appeal by leukaemia patient

Twenty-five-year-old Kumudini Samarasinghe, an old girl of High School, Mount Lavinia, is suffering from a kind of leukaemia (Philadephia negative chronic myeloid). At present, she is following a course of injections (interferon) which costs around Rs. 250,000. She also has to be hospitalised from time to time when her blood count goes down, to give her the necessary blood and medicine.

This course of injections is given to her to control her disease, but Dr. Jayantha Balawardene, who is treating her, has recommended an allogenic bone marrow transplant to cure her completely and save her life. He has recommended her to be taken to Apollo Hospital in Chennai, India, for this operation, which would cost around Rs. 3.5 million.

Since they are unable to foot this Bill, her husband M. H. M. Fernando, has appealed for public assistance to expedite the surgery and save her life. All donations and contributions can be credited to Savings A/C 8930000869, Commercial Bank, Mt. Lavinia.

Kidney patient needs assistance

Twenty-seven-year-old G. P. H. Indika Anura Siri of No. 72/19, Kalinga Mawatha, Narahenpita, Colombo 05, is suffering from a chronic kidney ailment which requires an urgent kidney transplant as recommended by Dr. Sanjaya of Apollo Hospital.

The total cost of the operation is estimated at Rs. 750,000, out of which the President's Fund has approved a sum of Rs. 300,000/-. Anura Siri is parentless and unmarried and also unemployed, and his own married sister has consented to donate one of her kidneys to save his life.

Since he requires a further sum of Rs. 450,000/- for the operation to be expedited, he requests philanthropists and the general public to assist his cause. All donations and contributions should be sent to A/c No. 8220005425, Commercial Bank, Narahenpita, Colombo 5.

Help save his life

Mr. P. Liyanamanage, 43 years of age, a father of three children, has been advised by Dr. Prasad Krishnan, MBBS, MS (PGI) Mch (AIIMS), Consultant Cardiac Surgeon of Apollo Hospital Colombo to undergo an urgent intracardiac repair of SVASD+PAPVC, The surgery to be performed at the Apollo Hospital, Colombo., is estimated to cost Rs. 325,000.00.

Since he is unable to foot this bill due to his present financial plight, he requests philanthropists and the generous public to assist his cause by sending whatever financial contribution possible to help expedite the surgery.

All contributions should be remitted to Savings Account No. 0010065658 at the Hatton National Bank Limited, Aluthkade Branch, Colombo 12.

Death of ex-ANCL Accountant

W. M. C. J. Wijetunga, Secretary-General, Private Tea Factory Owners' Association and formerly Accountant Administration of ANCL (Lake House) died on Friday under tragic circumstances. He was 61 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Nandani and two children, Indika (son) and Chamari (daughter).

His burial takes place at Borella Kanatta today (14th Sunday) at 3.30 p.m. with the cortege leaving residence No. 140/24, Gemunu Mawatha, Nawala Road, Nugegoda.
