Government for open education policies

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

The Government will take rapid steps to open our closed-door policies and expand our education sector without being restrictive and myopic in the areas of tertiary and university education.

Education Ministry Secretory Tara de Mel delivering the keynote address of the Gateway International School Annual Awards Day ceremony held at the BMICH main hall yesterday said that even though we have an increasing amount of students going into other fields of tertiary education, yet we are far behind some of our South Asian counterparts and certainly East Asian. She noted that out of those who qualified for university education annually only about 15 per cent of students enter the university education and over 85,000 young people leave out in the cold.

She said that the government will ensure the maintenance of quality and assure that the highest standards of our schools and tertiary education systems to keep in tact. She also said that their call for a significant increase in allocation for primary, secondary and university education has been accepted by the Treasury. "We are expecting to see some exciting figures when the budget is presented next week", she added.

She also added that private schools as well as the private universities must exist for a highly competitive choice but not just become a domain of the elite.
