Ananda, Ratnayake MMV win Tarbet

Ananda College athletes came on top to become boys overall champions with 123 1/3 points while A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala retained the girls overall title with 118 points at the three-day Sir John Tarbet Senior Championships 2004 conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools' Athletic Association and concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

D. S. Senanayake College finished runners-up in the boys overall with 121 points, and Mahinda College third with 115 points. Sumana Balika MV, Ratnapura and Holy Family Convent were joint runners-up with 110 points each in the girls' overall.

Four more new meet records were established yesterday, and the records tally rose to 13. The record breakers were Ruwani Rubasinghe of St. Mary's Convent who accounted for the first record in the girls under-20 triple jump with a leap of 12.25 metres, Sandapilee Bandara of Handunuwewea MMV who who threw a good distance of 35.57 metres for the new mark in the girls under-18 javelin throw Chamitha Ranaweera of Sujatha MMV who was responsible for the record in the boys under-16 100 metres hurdles event going over with a time of 15-6 secs while K. D. M. N. Kalupahana of Sujatha BV went over the hurdle in style for the other record in the girl's under 18-100 metres hurdles clocking' 15-2 secs.

G. P. Sanath Udayanga of Mahinda College, Galle was adjudged the 'Boy's Outstanding Athlete of the Meet for his feat in the triple jump - 15.56 metes. Meanwhile, R. K. A. Priyangika Maduwanthi of Maliyadeva BMV was the 'Girl's Outstanding Athlete. She set a new Sri Lanka record in the girls high jump event with a height of 1.75 metres.

Awards also went the Mahinda College being the 'Outstation Boy's' Champion's with 115 points, A. K. D. I. S. Chandrasekera of Ferguson High School Ratnapura as the 'Best Boy's Long Jumper' with a leap of 5.62 metres. The best 100 meters runner was K. D. M. P. Kalupahana of Sumana BV, Ratnapura with a time of 59.6 secs.

The 'Best High Jumper' was R. K. A. Priyanga Maduwanthi of Maliyadeva BV who cleared a height of 1.75 metres. D. S. Senanayake College became the Boy's Relay Champions with 55 points. Holy Family Convent, Wennappuwa took the Girl's Relay Champions title with 42 points.

Challenge Trohpies were also awarded to - Girls Under-16 champions - Girls High School, Kandy, Boys Under-16 champions Ananda College, Girls under-18 champions - Sumana BMV. Boys under-18 champions Mahinda College, Galle, Girls under-20 champions - A. Rathnayaka BMV, Walala Boys under - 20 champions D. S. Senanayake College, Outstation Track Events Champions - (Boys) - Joseph Vaz College, Wenappuwa - All Island Track Events Champions Ananda College, Outstation Field events champions (Boys) - Mahinda College-Island Field events champions - D. S. Senanayake College.
