Three ICT conferences in Colombo Sri Lanka will be hosting several important events in ICT from the end of November till early December. This will be the 6th International IT Conference (IITC-2004), the 2nd International Conference on e-Governance (ICEG - 2004) and the 20th Anniversary celebrations of the Asian Oceanian Association of IT industry associations (ASSOCIO ICT Summit - 2004). The Government of Sri Lanka, as decided by the Cabinet of Ministers has declared these three events as events of national importance and has also declared the week 29th November to 5th December 2004 as the ICT Week - 2004. The International IT Conference has been held consecutively since 1998 and has become the major forum for presenting research papers on the current work of IT professionals and academics both Sri Lankan and abroad. This year over 80 papers were submitted and 39 have been selected through international refereeing. The topics have been grouped into eight sessions: Language Processing Techniques, Networking & Internet Technologies, Secure Computing, Software Engineering & Processes, Image Processing Applications, Computational Intelligence, Web Services & Applications and Hardware Applications. As is usual, these presentations are supplemented by Keynote addresses will present by world renowned experts in IT. This year, we have six such Keynote addresses from Japan, Sweden, USA and Canada. The conference will be held from 29th November to 1st December at the BMICH. IITC-2004 was preceded by Pre-Conference workshops. The International Conference on e-Governance ICEG was first held in New Delhi, India in 2003 and was inaugurated by the President of India. The Organiser of ICEG-2003 invited the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka to host the ICEG-2004 in Sri Lanka. ICTA in turn requested the UCSC, which manages IITC to host ICEG as well and a decision was taken to hold both conferences parallel with a joint inauguration and common session on day one. Accordingly both conferences will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 29th November. At this inauguration, a postage stamp to mark the ICT Week - 2004 will also be issued. The purpose of the international conference on e-Governance is not only to provide a forum for discussing research findings, strategies and policies but also for learning from the innovative experiences of international best practice. It also aims to evolve an agenda for future applications and related research, so that e-Governance initiatives can be effectively moved from Policy to Reality. ICEG-2004 has attracted papers from all parts of the world and from over 40 papers submitted, 23 have been selected for presentation. On the 30th of November, the Conference will be held in the form of a Focused Seminar on e-Governance and will include several Keynote addresses and case studies from India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Philippines and Australia. There will also be presentations on e-Sri Lanka and Re-engineering Government outlining the strategy to be adopted by the ICT Agency and the Government of Sri Lanka. The Focused Seminar will be concluded by a Panel Discussion. IITC-2004 and ICEG - 2004 are organized by Infotel Lanka Society and managed by the University of Colombo School of Computing with the active support of the Prime Minister's Office. Several leading ICT-based organizations have come forward to provide generous sponsorship. |
