St. Peter's College, Colombo, was crowned all-island champions following the Grand Final of COMFEST 2004, an all island academic competition for A/L students organized by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Students from six schools in the Colombo region competed against 12 district winners from across the island at the final on November 6. With 250 total points, St. Peter's won a convincing victory over first runner-up Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya, with 228 points, and second runner-up Methodist College, Kollupitiya, with 218 points.

"We are extremely proud of all our outstanding competitors, and congratulate the winners from St. Peter's Ajitha Perera, Manager of ACCA Sri Lanka said. "These young people represent a bright future for accounting in Sri Lanka, and we hope that preparation for the competition has been beneficial in their pursuit of skills necessary for a comprehensive understanding of accounting".

The Grand Finals, held at Holy Family Convent, was divided into four sections to test different skills in the commercial arena. Piumi Gomes of Holy Cross Convent, Gampaha was proclaimed winner of the 'Wiz Kid' section, one representative of each school answered questions about current affairs and the surrounding world.

Holy Family Convent was winner of the 'Student Financial Bulletin', in which five-student groups from each school put together an impromptu magazine on commerce, judged on substance, accuracy and style. St. Peter's won the 'Crossword Puzzle' section another group assignment, and Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy, took first place in the 'Ad Act' competition, where students staged a three-minute advertisement judged on clarity of message, originality and creativity.

Chief Guest at the competition was Dr. W. G. S. Kalum, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura.

With more than 320,000 members and students in 160 countries, ACCA is the largest and fastest-growing accounting body in the world.
