Latest addition to Micro Sri Lankan luxury car to be launched in January

Everyone who is proud to own and drive a luxury Sri Lankan-made car can do so when Micro Cars Ltd a Member of transmec Holdings launch Micro Trend, the latest addition to the Micro family in January 2005.

Director Transmec Holdings C.P. Guhashanka said that the Micro Trend is fitted with a 970 cc Gasoline (MPI) engine, and it can comfortably accommodate five adults while there is sufficient boot space for the luggage when travelling long distances.

The seating interior is beige in colour with a walnut finish while there are centre placed cup holders and a lockable lower dash glove compartment.

The car is fitted with front bumper fog lamps as well as rear bumper fog lamps and full crystal lights. Guhashanka said the fuel consumption of the vehicle is between 14-16 km per litre which is very economical.Priced at Rs 1.2m plus VAT you can even purchase a car on easy payment terms.

This luxury car will be available in 15 different colours and comes with a two-year comprehensive warranty. " After placing an order we will need three months to deliver the car." Speaking of future plans he said that at present the production capacity of the company is about 50 vehicles per month and plans are underway to increase it to 100 vehicles per month from 2005.



Micro Trend

'Once the new car is launched we hope to appoint about 20 distributors islandwide initially. They will provide a 24 hour mobile service, spare parts on the shelf,and factory- trained technical staff to carry out maintainance work. This will help the customers as they will not have to travel to Colombo for maintainance and spare parts. New employment opportunities will also be opened up,'Guhashanka said.

Around 300 persons are directly employed while there are several employed indirectly. At present there are about 70 suppliers and some of them include seat manufacturers, cable manufacturers etc In this manner we also provide quite a lot of indirect employment opportunities as well,' Guhashanka said.

The Micro family of cars launched in 2003 include the Micro Econo (first car), Privilege(luxury version), Full option, MPV Junior(van) The brain child of Dr Lawrence Perera, the Micro Car project got off the ground in 1999 as he was keen to develop a Sri Lankan car.

It was in the design and development stage until 2003 while the prototypes were tested in 2003. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and the present Finance Minister Dr Sarath Amunugama helped the project from its initial stages while Chairman Ceylinco Consolidated Lalith Kotelawala seeing the potential helped the company to open the plant in Polgahawela.
