Mesticos enjoy popularity in Dubai by Mahes Perera
Back home after a successful tour in Dubai is Mesticos who performed for six months in Dubai, based at one of Dubai's popular night club Panarama Ceylao 1505. The brothers Vimal and Viraj Cooray played a repertoire of popular Sri Lankan music that was lapped up by the large Sri Lankan population who made daily visits to the club. Besides playing as a duo the brothers Cooray enlist the musicianship of their siblings Lakshantha on lead guitar and their sister on vocals. Viraj the keyboardist/vocalist was one time member of the band Misty and Dynamites, before he decided to join his brother vocalist Vimal for a duo scene. Mesticos enjoy the added advantage of being able to sing in many languages besides Sinhala and English. Their versatility in singing songs in Hindi, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian has helped in increasing their cosmopolitan fans. After a break in Sri Lanka, Mesticos will be in all probability off on a tour of concert dates in Europe. Reunion at the Blue by Mahes Perera
The dance 'mantras' at the Blue Elephant spun by KNH Project over the past few months have been cool sounds for the heated feet. The tracks were Chill Out House, Tribal and R&B. KNH (and who doesn't know them), are DJs Kapila, Naushad and Harith. "The hottest Chill Out House today is Martin Solveig's I'm a Good Man which we are proud to say is only played at our club and is a big favourite with the groovers" quips Naushad. But there are other favourites too that echo at the Blue, spun by these turntable manipulators. There's Benjamin Diamond's 'Little Scare', Kym Marsh's 'Cry' and from the R&B world, tracks by G Unit, Chingy, Beyonce, and LL Cool J to name a few of the many artistes who get aired from the console.
The good news that we have for all dance club groovers is that their favourite DJ Viran who was earlier one of the Blue team will be back at his old haunt this weekend, in all probability, to join KNH and spin those vinyls that were your favourites when he was here before he took wing to England. But that's not all. Together with KNH the foursome 'originals' will be spinning disks all night long during the festive season packed with unusual happenings that should not be missed. "DJ Viran is flying in with the latest grooves on vinyly including the hot R&B tracks that have not got on to the charts yet, tracke that you can listen to, dance to and be truly entertained" continues DJ Naushad the spokesman for the foursome. There's no denying that whatever they spin - be it tribal, soul or harder - this foursome puts in 200 per cent into everything they do. Check them out this season. The new sounds of Surge by Mahes Perera Providing weekend entertainment to music lovers and groovers in the coastal areas north of Colombo is the five piece outfit Surge, led by Chaminda Priyadarshana - keyboardist/vocalist. Come this Friday you can catch the band at the 'Cheers' pub at Seeduwa and if you miss them, then make your tracks to Club Palm Bay, Marawila on Saturday to enjoy their brand of music which is fast becoming popular.
Unlike some bands whose ultimate objective is to play at night spots in Colombo, Surge concentrates on playing in the north and the south circuits of Colombo which according to the leader is rewarding. "When we started off two years ago we were a trio band playing regularly at the Royal Oceanic, Blue Oceanic and Browns Beach hotels in Negombo, and soon I found that my schedule of playing dates was increasing which meant that an extension in the band was necessary. So now we are five piece outfit with Prabath Fernando on vocals, Priyal Fernando - lead guitar and vocals, Dili plays bass and sings too, while Dilan Wisidagama is our drummer and vocalist," Chaminda clues us in. A familiar band on stage for many functions, dances and weddings, Surge who played for two success packed New Year's Eve nights in the past two years at Browns Beach Hotel, Negombo, will be in action this year at the Club Palm Bay, Marawila for the Christmas season and New Year's Eve night.
