Sheru's musical odyssey

by Mahes Perera

A first meeting with young Sheru and you are attracted to her sincere friendliness like that of the Sri Lankan brand. She hails from the Maldives but was over here in Colombo for studies along with her two sisters.

That explains the friendliness! But deep down in her, she confesses, her love for music constantly stirred her to enter amateur singing talent shows in the Maldives and she longed for the day when she could be on stage entertaining audiences. "Often in the Maldives together with my sisters we used to go and see Manilal Perera in action and I enjoyed his style.

My brother Faizal Nazeem who is the General Manager of Royal Island, a hotel in the Resort complex was a friend of Manilal, so the visits were frequent and through Manilal,I met Benjy and I'm now with Aquarius and my dreams of singing with a band have come to pass" enthuses Sheru with that wide attractive smile of hers.

So how has it been for you with Aquarius?

"At the start I was nervous, but all the boys and Benjy helped me get over that initial feeling of fright. This was a professional band I'm a first timer and I told myself I must work hard. When Aquarius's singer Rozanne left, the band was in search of a 'singer as they had contracts to be covered. Sudu of Ultimate told Benjy to try me out. I went to Marianne David for vocal lessons and I'm grateful to her. Being the female singer for a band is like being in a whole new world in today's music scene. You have to sing, you have to dance (I love that dancing!) and you have to have a repertoire that will take in requests from the audience as well. So besides all the glamour it means work, work, work."

Talking of repertoire what are your preferences?

"I prefer to sing the ballads of the '60s and the '70s. From today's pop scene the songs of Shakira, Christina Aquilera, Britney and the hits from the R&B soul world."

Apart from singing and dancing Sheru with her hour-glass figure enjoys the usual shopping sprees like any other young girl. With the clothes she buys, she adapts the outfits to suit the stage and for kinky casual wear. When she's not involved in rehearsals during the day it's reading, watching movies and cooking. As for partying, 'not a chance, because of the many night-playing dates.'

Aquarius the band had a successful stay in Sri Lanka and as you read this, they are back in Dubai for another long contract. According to Benjy 'Clancy's was a packed scene with people turning up by 12 midnight. On the other hand at Mollys the audience wanted the 'bang' bang' type of music but they were on the floor from 9.30 pm.

The hut was good with the groovers wanting ballads and slow rock to dance and they came in late. "It's all a different lifestyle here compared to foreign countries where the action starts by 9.00 pm. We are off to Dubai on November 23 to play at the Ramada Continental sponsored by SriLankan Airlines." So its arriverdici from Sheru and Aquarius.
