War on drugs by Jayampathy Jayasinghe The IGP Chandra Fernando addressing the media at Police Headquarters yesterday said that the Police had launched a relentless campaign against drug trafficking and dismissed allegations that senior police officers were linked to a drug baron as farcical. Inquiries conducted so far into the murder of Justice Sarath Ambepitiya have not revealed any LTTE connections but the police are probing further he said. Asked whether there was any political link, the IGP said there was no evidence to that effect. Ample scientific evidence had been gathered against the suspects involved but could not be revealed as there was a court case pending. There was concrete evidence against the suspects involved in the murder, IGP said at a media briefing held at police Headquarters last week. The seven suspects arrested in this connection have been remanded pending further investigations. The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) was probing further on past judgements and future judgements that were to be delivered by Judge Ambepitiya to establish the real motive for his murder. Answering a question the IGP however declined to comment on the number of weapons recovered from the assassin but said several weapons have been recovered in the course of the investigation. There was no one to claim the reward money of Rs. 10 lakhs offered by the police as most clues were sought through scientific methods.
