Hangman awaits green light

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

Prison officials have repaired the gallows and are awaiting the Government's green light to hang 49 prisoners who have been convicted. Another 150 convicts have appealed against the death penalty given to them, Prisons Commissioner General Rumy Marzook told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

The gallows were introduced to Sri Lanka in 1884. Since then 1868 prisoners have been hanged until hanging was suspended in 1976, he said. The last person to hang in Welikada was Chandradasa alias Hodapapuwa in 1975. T. M. Jayawardane was the last person to hang in Bogambara in 1976.

He was convicted in the famous Thismada murder case.
