12 Indian fishermen kidnapped by Bangladeshi pirates

CALCUTTA, India, Saturday (AFP)

Twelve Indian fishermen have been kidnapped by Bangladeshi pirates while fishing in a river near the Bay of Bengal, police said Friday.

Police official B.C. Mondal said 15 fishermen had gone fishing on Wednesday evening in Thakurani River in the Sunderban forests, about 140 kilometres (25 miles) south of Calcutta, capital of West Bengal state.

"Bangladeshi pirates attacked their trawlers and kidnapped 12 of them yesterday (Thursday)," Mondal said, adding three managed to escape and inform local police. West Bengal Sunderbans Development Minister Kanti Ganguly said the pirates had taken the fishermen and their three trawlers to Talpatty Char near the India-Bangladesh border.

A big police search party was rushed to the spot on Friday morning and were being helped by coast guards, Ganguly said.
