First Professor of HRM

Dr. Henerath. H. D. N. P. Opatha, Head of the Department of Human Resource Management and Director, Local Secretariat of the Sri Jayawardenapura University (SJPU) has been appointed as Professor of Human Resource Management (HRM) on Merit in the department of HRM, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce of the SJPU, with effect from 26th June 2003.

Prof. Opatha has been setting records in the field of HRM in Sri Lanka during his career as an academician and became the first Professor of HRM in Sri Lanka and the youngest to achieve (at 40 years) full status on merit, directly getting double exemptions from Senior Lecturer grade 1 and Associate professor levels in the field of Management Studies and Commerce in Sri Lanka.

He was born in Dambulla where he received his primary and secondary education. He had the distinction of been the first A/L commerce student of Dambulu Maha Vidyalaya to enter a university and gain admission to SJPU.

Prof. Opatha holds a BSc in Business Administration (Special) with honours (SJPU) MSc in Business Administration specialising in Personnel Management (SJPU);, Master of Business Administration in HRM from the University of Birmingham, UK and a PhD in HRM from University Uttara Malaysia. He is the first Sri Lankan to qualify with two Masters specialising in HRM and a Doctor of Philosophy in HRM. In addition, he holds a Diploma in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations and a Diploma in English from the UK.

Prof. Opatha joined the SJPU as an academic, turning down several administrative positions, including Sri Lanka Administrative Service and Sri Lanka Education Administrative Services, due to the desire he had in developing HRM education. He has contributed in many ways for the development of HRM education in Sri Lanka and possesses extensive experience in teaching both at undergraduate and post graduate levels as well as several years of experience in research supervision, examination and HRM consultancy.

He has contributed 21 research papers to Sri Lankan and International Journals of repute and is the author of first comprehensive book on Personnel Management, written in Sinhala and several other books published in English on HRM.
