Akash :

Dreaming of Vienna

by Mahes Perera

Five young hearts are happy that their original single "I Wanna Rock You" is currently enjoying success in the number four slot in the radio charts and they are keeping their fingers crossed that the song will grab the top rung soon.

Akash who literally burst into the home music scene in July won the Best Original Song at the TNL On Stage competition in October and now the boys have set their eyes at representing Sri Lanka at the World Music Festival in Vienna next year 2005.

"We never thought that we will be selected as one of the finalists for this competition and now that our single is doing fine we hope our dream of going to Vienna will come true. Of course we have to thank our Manager bassist Thilak Dias for all the guidance given to us" the members speak in unison.

Akash - the boy band comprises musicians who are not more than 20 years of age. In fact the youngest member in the band is just fifteen years loves playing rugby and his interest in music cannot be contained. He is Lanthra Perera who plays lead guitar and sings most of the band's selections.

With his tenor voice renditions of some of the rock covers Lanthra is sure fire material for the future of the rock music scene here in Sri Lanka. We had Chitral Somapala, but we lost him to Europe and we hope that Lanthra will be with us.

The other members of this 'raring-to-go' band are Pabalu Wijegoonewardena on drums, who also plays the yak bera and low country drums for the fusion selections, Yasiru Sudasinghe plays bass, while Samindu Gunasekera sits at the keyboards, and Sarani Perera plays the violin to give an exotic touch to the music.

Sarani incidentally is the son of one of Sri Lanka's leading violinist Kalani Perera. Recently Akash have got an additional keyboardist, Krishan Marlon Perera and he also doubles up on guitar and vocals. "We are rehearsing for a new album of Sinhala rock.

The CD will contain twelve tracks and the songs have been composed by Thilak Dias and we hope to release the CD soon" Lanthra provides the information.

Their manager Thilak reveals that he never thought that the boys will pick up the classic rock sounds with ease and interest.

"Ever since the boys came together to rehearse and play as Akash, I've been making them listen a lot to these bands.

They were all new in this field but they were quick to learn the intricacies of playing rock with eagerness.

I think that classic rock is the best platform - because it helps you to branch off on an original route with success and not be mixed up with your ideas when composing your music" comments the manager Thilak Dias. Here's wishing Akash good luck and happy rock success!
