GMOA tells SLMC : Strictly obey Court order The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has appealed to the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to strictly abide by the Court order to safeguard the medical profession and not give into threats by the group of lawyers appearing on behalf of some apothecaries. In a press statement issued few days ago it said: "The GMOA wishes to bring to the notice of the public of a major conspiracy to bring on par a group of apothecaries who purported to have studied medicine for a period of 3 years. The GMOA understands that the Sri Lanka Medical Council is being pressurised by a group of lawyers appearing on behalf of these apothecaries. They are threatening to sue the council for contempt of Court. The application form filled and forwarded for the purpose of recognising a degree or equivalent qualification under section 29 (1) (b) (ii) (bb) and (2) (b) (iii) (bb) of the Medical ordinance, an apothecary reads as follows: 1. The Duration of the course: Full Time for 3 years 2. The name of Medical School/Institution a. Two and half years in Faculty of Med icine Colombo, b. 15 years in Government Service as a RMP (Apothecary), c. Two and a half years training at 208/A, Colombo Road, Kurunegala by a Russian Higher Education Institute. "The Apothecaries contend (vide a Court order) that the above is a qualification that can be equated to a six-year Russian Degree that is normally obtained or a MBBS (Colombo) that is recognised by the SLMC under section 29 of the ordinance. "The GMOA calls on the SLMC not to succumb to the dictates of lawyers and strictly abide by the Court order in order safeguard the Medical Profession. The GMOA believes that it would be more advisable for the SLMC to resign enmass rather than give full registration to these apothecaries who have obtained a bogus qualification probably buying their way through. "Finally the GMOA appeals to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to personally to intervene in this matter to avoid a major calamity in the medical profession." |
