Two kidney transplanting surgeries successfully performed by L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy For the first time in the Sri Lankan history two kidney transplanting surgeries on two kidney patients have been successfully performed by using two kidneys taken from a dead person at the Kidney Transplanting Unit of the General Hospital (Teaching) Kandy. Consultant surgeon Dr. P. K. Harischandra has performed the surgeries and he was assisted by a team of doctors. The operations lasted for nearly 5 hours. Two kidneys extracted from the dead body have been transplanted to Himali Neranjala, an employee of a garment factory at Dehiattakandiya and to Leslie Perera of Yatiyantota. Both of them have been suffering from kidney ailment for sometime. Perera is a father of two children. According to Dr. Harischandra this was the first time that kidneys extracted from one dead person and transplanted on two other patients successfully. These two kidneys have been extracted from a patient who died of internal haemorrhage in the brain following an accident. It has taken two hours to take away the kidneys from the dead body and another 5 hours to transplant them on two patients. Dr. Harischandra added that kidneys of those who die due to poisoning could not be used for transplanting. |
