International Confab on 'Towards Democracy and Peace in Sri Lanka'

by Rohan Mathes

The World Alliance for Peace in Sri Lanka (WAPS), in association with the Sansadaya (Forum), will hold its second international conference, on the theme, "Towards Democracy and Peace in Sri Lanka" on December 18 at the BMICH. This would be a follow-up to the successful but controversial 'Oslo Conference' on "Road Map to Peace in Sri Lanka", held in Oslo last August.

This was announced at a press conference, attended by the representatives of the WAPS and the Sansadaya, last Wednesday at the Galadari Hotel.

WAPS Co-ordinator T.H. Karunatilleke told newsmen that the Colombo Conference, similar to the last 'Oslo conference', will address a range of burning issues pertaining to democracy and the territorial integrity of the country with an emphasis on foreign relations, human rights and the rule of law within a multi-cultural Sri Lanka.

The first session of the conference would deal with international dimensions where Dr. Ved Vaidik of India would speak on 'Sri Lanka, LTTE and South Asian Security, followed by Dr. Susantha Goonetilake addressing on 'Norway Subverting: Directly and Indirectly' and Norwegian F. Rovik of the Norwegian Amnesty International speaking on 'Norway Aiding LTTE Terrorism'. Paul Harris from UK, in a Conflict Analysis, would speak on 'Sri Lanka's Territorial Integrity: Is this the Last Chance?'

The second session will deal with 'Terrorism and the Peace Process' with Prof. Shantha Hennayake addressing on 'Impact of the LTTE on Civilian Life', Prof. Harendra de Silva on 'Child Soldiers in the Name of Martyrdom', Prof. G.H. Peiris on 'Oslo Declaration: What is it?' and S.L. Gunasekera on ISGA and the Future of Sri Lanka. The third session will focus on a range of silenced voices under the title 'Democratic Voices from the North and East', with TULF and EPDP spokesman speaking on 'Democratic Politics for Tamils'.

Dr. S.H. Hasbullah would speak on 'Ethnic Cleansing of Muslims', while Sunil Aluthgamage will talk on 'Suppressed Voices of the North and East Sinhalese. The book 'Road Map to Peace in Sri Lanka', issued by WAPS and published by Vijitha Yapa will also be launched at this conference, WAPS and 'Sansadaya' Spokesmen said at the press conference.
