Twenty per cent increase in cancer patients by Ananda Kannangara The latest statistics issued by the Sri Lanka Cancer Society (SLCS) has revealed that 260 cancer patients were diagnosed by the Society's polyclinics during the first eleven months of this year. This is a 20 per cent increase, compared to the number of patients who had sought medical assistance during the corresponding period of 2003. "At least 25 to 30 patients seek medical assistance from our clinics, conducted free of charge on the second Sunday of every month," SLCS, Administrative secretary K. Weeratunga told the Sunday Observer. The clinics are conducted at the Sri Lanka Cancer Society at No. 37/25, Bullers Lane, Colombo 7. Weeratunga also said that the Society is spending a colossal sum of money annually on the program considering a large number of needy cancer patients deserving specialised treatment. Dr. N.C. Cooray, Dr. Nalin Rodrigo, Dr. (Mrs.) H. Munasinghe and Dr. (Mrs.) Ira Ratnayake are some of the specialists who attend the clinics. Weeratunga said that the program which commenced in 1977 had been very popular among patients due to the providing of free diagnosis by physicians specialised in cancer including oncologists, pathologists, dental surgeons and gynaecologists. "Sophisticated equipment are utilized in the diagnosis the disease and the needy are directed to mediclinics, conducted at State hospitals including the Maharagama Cancer hospital," he said. |
