Death of ex-DIG, A.C.S. Gaffoor Former DIG, A.C.S. Gaffoor, passed away on Saturday after a brief illness. He was a mountain of a man and was the cynosure of all eyes wherever he went. He was often seen at trouble spots in the city of Colombo, during the past three decades. Be it a students, strike at the Colombo university, or a demonstration by a political party, or during a picketing campaign, Gaffoor always made his presence felt among the crowd. His imposing figure often kept mobs at bay. He served for a long period in the Colombo division as OIC of Borella and Fort police stations and later as Senior Supdt., of Police and as a DIG. Gaffoor was injured on his head when he stopped a violent mob who tried to enter the Abhayarama temple at Narahenpita, during a demonstration in 1988. He was rushed to hospital but was back on the job one hour later. Such was his devotion to duty. After retirement, he spent a quiet life in Colombo. Gaffoor joined the Police Department as a sub-inspector in 1956 and soon rose to the rank of DIG. He was a fine hockey player during his schooldays. His younger brother, ASP, Sahabdeen, met an untimely death in 1988. (J.J.) |
