Theravada Buddhism brings unity - PM by Rohan Mathes Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse reminisced that Buddhism is a holistic civilization inclusive of a rich cultural heritage and a code of ethics which has the ability of moulding humans to face the daunting tasks of today. The Premier said this when he addressed the distinguished guests at the conclusion of the World Buddhist Summit in Myanmar. He said that Lord Buddha had preached the benefits and the importance of listening to Dhamma discourses at the suitable time. The Summit was a timely event to reflect the message of love and compassion for the creation of a peaceful mind among human beings, to create a peaceful world. He expressed faith in the Forum of being helpful to alert sensible Buddhists to organise themselves in averting erosion of Buddhism, addressing the glaring problems facing the contemporary Buddhists, and also reinvigorate the Maha Sangha for a progressive and learned leadership in order to propagate the Dhamma. Sri Lanka and Myanmar were intertwined by the golden thread of Theravada Buddhism and it is the fervent hope and wish of the government and the Sri Lankan people to cherish and consolidate the cultural bonds that had prevailed over the centuries between the two countries. "Iam pleased to observe the manner in which the Summit has brought about unity among Theravada Buddhist countries, paving the way for mutual cooperation among them", Rajapakse added. |
