Army rejects ammunition

by Ranga Jayasuriya

Army has rejected a Rs. 27 million worth consignment of 10,000 rounds of ammunition for armoured tanks supplied by a Yugoslav based company through a local agent company headed by a retired Army Colonel

These rounds of ammunition supplied by the Yugoslav company, Ugo Exports are reported to be outdated after tests carried out following the arrival of the shipment in Colombo.

The consignment comprised 30mm high explosive ammunition for BTR 80 and BMP 2 armoured tanks.

Military spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake said the ammunition in question had earlier been inspected by the SL Army officials who visited Yugoslavia prior to the approval of the tender.

"But ammunition supplied are not of the kind we ordered," he said.

He, however, said the Yugoslav company was insisting that it had fulfilled the requirements and that armoured tanks must be inspected by its specialists.
