'Pappa' Jayathilake - a fine sportsman by Upananda Jayasundera, Kandy Sports Special Corr Old Kingswoodian D.U.M. Jayathilake can truly be called a fine allround sportsman for all what he has done in sports. Right now he is in charge of the Physical Education Department of the University of Peradeniya. Besides the work involved at the Peradeniya University, he is the National Weightlifting Champion for the last ten years and in Powerlifting, he had a full total lift of 665 kgs which is the highest 'lift' by a Sri Lankan. His prowess does not end merely at domestic competition. He had represented the country at the SAF Games in weightlifting and Asian Games in powerlifting and bodybuilding. Right now, he is Secretary of the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation and also secretary of the Sri Lanka University Sports Association. As a schoolboy at Kingswood, he has won Sri Lanka Schools colours in athletics (discus throw). Like father, like son - so the saying goes and pappa Jayathilake has done well in getting his son Ransilu into the top grade in weightlifting and the son had not appointed him and did well to win a Gold Medal at a recent contest in Australia. The pappa's coaching has also brought other medal winners in N. Samararatne, C. Wijeratne and R. Kumara who won bronze medals. There is more to the prowess of this sportsman. He also played rugby football for Kandy Sports Club. |
