Ruwantha and Angelo best junior cricketers Ruwantha Fernandopulle (St. Joseph's) and Angelo Perera (St. Peter's) won the best peformance awards in the under 16 and under 14 age groups respectively at the Astra Schools Junior Cricket Cup 2004 Awards ceremony held at the BMICH last Tuesday. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse was the chief guest and gave away the awards. Fernandopulle who captained the under 16 Joes team, scored 621 runs in 11 innings including two centuries (140) against Prince of Wales, Moratuwa and (125) against St. Sebastian's, Moratuwa for an avergae of 69.0. He also scored four half centuries and was also a member of the first eleven team. Roshane de Silva, another Josephian was awarded the runners-up trophy. He too has two hundreds and a couple of fifties and was a member of the college senior team too. Peterite Angelo Perera representing the under-14 team has struck two double hundreds and a century which probably enabled him to clinch the Most Outstanding Under-14 cricketer's award in the tournament. His double hundreds were against Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa 229, and 206 against Royal, Panadura and a century against Dharmapala Pannipitiya. In eight innings, Angelo Perera had scored 718 runs, averaging 143.6. The runner-up award went to M. D. K. J. Perera of Kottawa Dharmapala MV. He had struck centuries against Nalanda, Colombo and D.S. Senanayake, Colombo. |
