196 teachers punished in Japan TOKYO, Saturday (AFP) A record 196 Japanese school teachers faced disciplinary action for indecent acts in the year to March 2004, newspapers said Saturday. The number of teachers at publicly funded schools given dishonorable discharges and other punishments for committing indecent acts rose by 21 from the previous year, newspapers said, quoting a government survey. The teachers were accused of indecent assault, molestation and sexual harassment of colleagues and students, according to the survey carried out by the education ministry. A 43-year-old elementary school teacher in Kanagawa prefecture west of Tokyo, was punished for sending e-mail messages saying "I love you" or "I want to meet you" to female students. A 47-year-old junior high school teacher in western Japan faced dishonorable discharge for having sex with a 17-year-old girl and secretly filming the inside of a women's restroom at a department store. The survey also showed a record 494 public school teachers were punished for inflicting corporal punishment on students, up 43 from the previous year. Teachers reporting sick citing mental distress rose by 507 to a record 3,194, accounting for some 53 percent of total on sick leave, the survey showed. |
