Matara Rest House - a delightful place to relax

Are you tired of the hustle and bustle of the city life and looking for a place to relax and enjoy the weekend or are you looking for a place to have a meal on your way to or from Kataragama ? Then the ideal place is the Matara Rest House managed by the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

Situated inside the Matara Fort it is just a walking distance from the bus stand or the railway station. Refurbished at a cost of Rs 20 million it is open from 6am to 11 pm. "Advance bookings can be done from Colombo and we welcome it as it is always occupied during the weekends, " Deputy Director Rest House Management UDA, Jayalath, said.

The Rest House has 16 comfortable bedrooms including three airconditioned rooms with all modern amenities. The large rooms are very comfortable and spacious and the sea breeze from the Indian ocean makes even the non - airconditioned rooms very cool. This is the ideal place for a loner to listen to the sounds of the waves sipping a hot or cold drink.

The Manager I.C. Suraweera and the courteous staff will pamper and make you feel comfortable from the time you step in till its time to say good bye and you can be sure that there will be happy memories for you to take home. Travellers who visit the Rest House can enjoy a dip in the sea as well.

All you lovers of food can enjoy Eastern, Western and Sri Lankan foods as well as the mouth - watering seafood specialities such as prawns, cuttle fish, seer, Thalapath and the Matara Special the "Ambul Thiyal".

The Rest House consist of a restaurant and a Bar and it also provides laundry facilities to the customers. The Rest House also provides secured parking and a security service.

" We also cater and provide facilities to host weddings, functions, seminars and conferences. Easy access and the facility to park many vehicles have made the Rest House a venue with a high demand," said Jayalath.

The Rest House also provides breakfast, lunch and dinner to anyone who wants to have a meal.

Any person staying at the Rest House can visit the Dondra Light House, The temples located at Weherahena and Wavurukannala, Polhena Beach, Matara Dutch Fort,Star Fort, Devinuwara Devalaya, Dickwella Blow Hole(hummanaya) and Matara Church.
