Tigers review Govt.'s new proposals

From Tamil Press by S. Selvakumar

Constant clashes between Sri Lankan and South Indian fishermen off the seas of Mannar reached dangerous heights and, on and off, even the Sri Lankan Navy got involved in the fracas. On the political front, Tigers are studying the new proposals submitted by the Government through Norway to break the deadlock on the stalled peace talks.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party Central Committee which met on Friday with President Kumaratunga in the chair gave her the authority to make a decision on the proposed peace talks with the Tigers, the Thinakkural reported on Monday.

It also reported that the SLFP working committee would hold talks with the alliance partner JVP to reach a compromise since it was opposed for talks on the ISGA basis. In another story, the paper said a five-member LTTE team paid a courtesy call on North-East Governor Tyronne Fernando at his official residence on Friday. Sri Lanka rejected an Indian proposal to issue licences to Indian fishermen to fish in Sri Lanka territorial waters.

Tourism Minister Anura Bandaranaike addressing a public rally in Kegalle said whatever "Padha Yatra" the UNP would hold for the release of S. B. Dissanayake, it would not materialise nor he would get a Presidential pardon.

Sri Lanka Navy attacked a flotilla of Indian fishing trawlers near Kachchativu on Saturday night in which one trawler was toppled and the rest escaped, the Virakesari said in a Chennai date-line story.

The Sudaroli in its lead story on Tuesday said the government had prepared a new agenda for talks with the LTTE and it was handed over by Peace Secretariat head Jayantha Dhanapala to Erik Solheim and Norwegian Ambassador Hans Bratskaar. A copy of it was also handed over to Anton Balasingam in London on Monday to be conveyed to Prabhakaran.
