Glimpses of the past by Nisansala R. Aryachandra Pictures of history gives the present generation an indication as to how it was in the past. And it brings back memories to the minds of the old about times gone by.
Towns and cities we now inhabit have not always been what they are now Covered in greenery or streams and water falls, this land was truly a paradise. The only way to revisit paradise is to go down memory lane with the aid of one of the greatest inventions of mankind - pictures. This rare opportunity was offered by Wattis Fine Art of Hong Kong in association with Geoffrey Dobbs of Elephant Walk at Ward Place to treat our eyes to a glimpse from the past. The exhibition which got underway in Colombo on December 21 will conclude on December 26 and move on to the Dutch House in Galle from December 28 - 30, 2004. The exhibition 'Early Views of Ceylon c. 1528 - 1920' features a wide collection of photographs and books, original maps. dated in the period mentioned in the title of the exhibition. Lovers of geography and history are assured of a fine experience that would give a peep into the colonial days and leave in mind something to ponder as to how our country was in the early days. On the other hand, collectors of exquisite photographs and rare maps of Sri Lanka will also be served bountifully, in terms of quality. Although, the pictures are from photographers around the world, much of the collection comprises photos taken by Dutch and English photographers like Francois Valentyn and Guillaume de L'Isle. Geoffrey Dobbs, owner of Elephant Walk, and one of the organisers says the collection is brought from England and that the exhibition is a one time event, which makes it an even rarer experience not to be missed. |
