Killers on the run

by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

A special operation has been launched by the Anti-Crime Unit at Police Headquarters with assistance of the Special Task Force (STF) and the Colombo Crime Division (CCD), to apprehend dangerous criminals who are evading arrest in Colombo and elsewhere, Police sources said.

Several underworld characters wanted by the Police in connection with serious crime such as contract killing, bank robberies and extortion from businessmen are said to be on the run following the launching of anti crime operation.

The operation is spearheaded by Crimes and Intelligence DIG, Jayantha Wickremaratne and assisted by ASP Wedisinghe from the Anti Crime Unit at the Police Headquarters.

DIG Wickremaratne said that a police team had been deployed to track down the third man who escaped during a shootout with the police at Nawagamuwa last week. A suspect who was inside a van at the time of shooting had escaped and his whereabouts are not known as yet.

However, the two men inside the van succumbed to their injuries. They had been identified as one Mohammed Buhari from Kotahena and Dimukthi Sandaruwan from Pugoda. Police are checking the antecedents of both men to find out whether they have been involved in previous crime.

However police suspect that they were involved in several underworld activities. DIG Wickremaratne said they had called for a report from the Criminal Records Office (CRO) to find out whether the two men were wanted by Police for other offences. The incident took place closer to the Nawagamuwa Police station near a gas filling station when a police party led by Inspector Kodituwakku from the Anti Crimes Division spotted the van they were looking for. A little while later a gun battle ensued between the Police and the three men when the suspects had fired at the police.

Last month the Police Crime Unit shot dead another dangerous criminal known as G. Chaminda Roshan Silva alias Thoppi Chaminda who was wanted in connection with nine murders and several extortion cases in the Greater Colombo area. He was shot dead when he attempted to throttle a Policeman while being escorted to Kiribathgoda.

A Chinese built micro pistol and several rounds of ammunition were found in his possession. Meanwhile the police are searching for his associates in the Kiribathgoda area.
