Donors visit flood affected areas by Jayantha Sri Nissanka Foreign donor agencies will visit the flood affected areas this week to assess the damage caused as a result of heavy floods with the objective of preparing estimates to assist the victims. They believe the damages are amounting to millions. The UNDP, WHO, UNICEF and other NGOs will visit Ampara, Trincomalee, Mulativu, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa districts with the officials of the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC). The NDMC has estimated the damage to be millions of rupees but declined to give an exact figure. The floods have hit the economy of about 40,000 families by affecting 98,252 acres of their paddy lands, Director of the NDMC N. D. Hettiarachchi told the Sunday observer. Paddy cultivation is the main income of most of the affected families. Majority of the total affected paddy lands have been totally destroyed, Hettiarachchi said. The NDMC said that the Government has given dry rations to 194,532 affected families. Of the total affected families, 23,000 families have been displaced. But People in some districts have complained to the District Secretariats that they have not received dry rations or any other assistance so far. |
