Sri Lanka - Pakistan u.19 clashes will help develop young cricketing skills

by Ranjan Anandappa

The Sri Lanka Under 19 cricket team that will take wing to Pakistan on December 31, to play two four-day unofficial 'Tests' and three limited overs matches, is a well knit combination, according to Manager Ashley de Silva.

"The tour will no doubt help the youngsters of either side to develop their skills for the future, and find replacements for the senior teams", said Ashely de Silva the former Test wicket-keeper.

"Playing in Pakistan against their counterparts will put the Lankans into a very competitive test as most Pakistanis play cricket at a higher level," De Silva hoped and added that an under-19 tour of any length heralds the beginning of a player's career from where they lay the foundation for big time cricket. Previous tours have helped to identify young Test aspirants, and this tour too will be no exception.

The team has some experienced players who have previously toured Pakistan and the World Cup held in Bangladesh.

Harsha Vitharana from St. Aloysius College, Galle a reliable top-order batsman will lead the side. Upul Tharanga, Gihan de Silva and Kosala Kulasekera are the other three players who represented the country at the last Under 19 World Cup.

The Sri Lanka team will arrive in Karachi and play their first four-day unofficial 'Test' on January 3 at the Steel Mills grounds in Karachi while the second four-day unofficial 'Test' will be played in Multan Cricket Stadium starting on January 9.
